WELCOME

to Theresa Braga-Henebry's portfolio

Below, four galleries of artwork can be found, exhibiting pieces from my four years in high school in chronological order: Ninth grade on top, 10th below that, and so on. I chose to format my portfolio in this way so that the viewer can see my growth as an artist while scrolling down. Additional galleries of separate projects can be found below 12th grade.

NINTH GRADE

During 9th grade, I took Art 1 and Art 2 at my high school in Brookings, SD. That year, I entered into an art contest at my local library to illustrate a scene from a book, and a national art contest with the theme "preserve the environment".

TENTH GRADE

10th grade was my least engaged year in terms of art, but I have a few pieces from Ceramics/Sculpture class and personal projects.

ELEVENTH GRADE

11th grade consisted of a drawing & painting class and one very large, time consuming collage project for the SD state art competition.

TWELFTH GRADE

I took no formal art classes during grade 12, so all of the pieces are smaller than previous years, as well as being attempts to improve my techniques and style.

THE LAPTOP CASE PROJECT

My high school in South Dakota loaned out laptops to all students, but we were required to buy the laptop cases, and were allowed to decorate them if we wanted. One year I took my friends' laptop cases and painted them as Christmas presents.  I don't have photo documentation of most of the cases, but the ones I do have photos of can be found below.

EMBROIDERY BURP CLOTHS

Two of my sisters became first-time mothers in spring 2019, so my mom and I worked together to embroider burp cloths as personal and practical gifts for their families.

THE MURAL

In May 2018, Ricky Ganci, an English teacher and one of the most well-liked teachers in my South Dakota high school, learned that he would be switching rooms over the summer. In his old classroom, Mr. Ganci had student-painted murals that had related to his curriculum years ago, so he took switching to a new classroom as an opportunity to ask current students to paint murals of more current themes in his classes. Mr. Ganci asked a fellow art student to paint an ocean on one wall, and asked me to paint a depiction of Joseph Campbell's "Hero's Journey"on another. After about a month and a half of brainstorming, I decided to ask a cartoonist/author, Ben Hatke, if I could use characters and scenes  from his series "Zita the Spacegirl" on  my wall. After Mr. Hatke granted permission, I set off to piece Zita's story together with the 15 stages of the hero's journey that Mr. Ganci teaches in his sophomore English class. The project took roughly 160 hours to complete, so please enjoy looking through the photos below. :)
